The Park Sharon 12Y All Stars competed in the NC State Cal Rikpken 12Y All Star tournament held July 10-12 in Mount Airy, NC. The team qualified for the state tournament after placing 3rd in the Area 4 tournament. The tournament brought the top 12 teams together to compete for the State title. The tournament is an interesting formats: teams are divided in 2 leagues then 2 divisions per league to compete in 4-game pool play. The top team from each division advances to single-elimination bracket play, along with the 2nd place team with the best record from each league.
Park Sharon started tournament pool play on Friday morning by beating Area 2 Runner-up Hildebran 2-1. This game was a nail-biting pitching duel with Jake Barker, Zach Linick, and Alex LaPiana taking the mound for Park Sharon.
On Saturday morning, Park Sharon beat the Area 3 Champions from North Surry 10-6. The highlight of this game was Zack Linick's 3-run homerun over the centerfield fence -- this was his first homerun ever!
A thunderstorm Saturday afternoon created a rain delay and some muddy field conditions for Park Sharon's third game on Saturday afternoon. The team played hard and Zack Linick hit another 3-run homer! Despite their efforts, Park Sharon was out-hit by Area 2 Runner-up Bunker Hill for a 13-7 loss.
Sunday afternoon brought sunny skies and some exciting baseball to Mount Airy. Park Sharon was playing Area 3 Third Place Surrey Central in a tough matchup. Park Sharon was coming into the game with a 2-1 record and Surrey Central had a 1-2 record. Based on other tournament results, this game would determine which of these teams would advance to bracket play as the League Wild Card team. Both teams played hard and the game went into extra innings. Eventually, Surrey Central pulled off the 9-8 win.
The Park Sharon 12Y team proved that they are one of the top 8 teams in North Carolina. They played hard and they had fun! Each and every player contributed to their success this season. They represented Park Sharon well and we are very proud of them!
